The Aquamation Process

While traditional cremation is more commonly offered through local pet funeral homes, aquamation (also known as alkaline hydrolysis) offers a cleaner, more gentle alternative. This water-based process uses 90% less energy than flame cremation and produces no direct emissions of harmful gases or mercury. It also preserves up to 20% more of the bone material. Compared to natural decomposition, which can take decades underground, aquamation completes this return-to-nature process in less than a day.

What Is Alkaline Hydrolysis?

Scientifically referred to as alkaline hydrolysis, aquamation mirrors the natural breakdown that would occur if your pet were laid to rest in the soil. Through a combination of gentle water flow, warmth, and alkalinity, the organic material is broken down over the course of approximately 20 hours. What remains at the end of the process are the inorganic bone minerals: pure calcium phosphate.

These remains are then carefully dried and processed into a fine, white powder. This is the same step that follows flame cremation. The ashes are returned to you in a custom engraved urn, and you’re welcome to honor them in any way you would with traditional cremation ashes. Scattering, storing, planting, or memorializing, every option remains open to you.
